How to Clean Artificial Turf

One of the main reasons people opt to have artificial turf installed is its relatively low-profile as far as maintenance is concerned. Unlike real grass, that requires quite a bit of care and a significant amount of water to thrive year after year, synthetic turf can do quite well will little effort on the owner’s part. Pair the time savings of not worrying about an organic lawn with the monetary savings due to a lowered water bill, and the appeal of fake grass is clear. But what exactly has to be done to keep the grass clean?

How much traffic does your artificial grass see?

If your grass sees plenty of wear and tear, be it from children or animals, make it a habit to lightly wash it every week or so. That doesn’t mean you need to spend a lot of time outside – a light spritzing is often more than enough to keep synthetic grass in good shape.

Clean and “Fluff” Every Month (Or So)

Another important guideline to follow to keep your artificial turf looking great is to remove dirt, dust, leaves, and other debris every month. You can do this with a stiff brush that will really grab the blades and pull anything that doesn’t belong there out. Once that’s done, you should use a handled brush or broom to sweep away from the natural grain of the fake grass. This “fluffs” the grass and keeps it nice and thick.

Clean Pet Waste Regularly

Remember that artificial turf won’t absorb solid organic matter like real grass. While liquid can drain through the synthetic lawn to the soil underneath, solid waste will need to be removed in a timely manner using a scooper or baggie. Follow that up by hosing down the area.
